Kara Friedrich and her daughter, Cassie Musick, have a lot in common. Both enjoy camping, watching Denver Broncos games, going to country concerts and volunteering in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Kara and Cassie, mom and daughter dynamic duo, are changing the course of pancreatic cancer in their community through PurpleStride and beyond.

Having lost four family members to the disease, including Kara’s dad, they honor him by continuing the volunteer work he did.

“When my dad was diagnosed in November 2000, he was introduced to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network by his surgeon. My parents were very active in one of the first affiliates in Las Vegas, where he did several news interviews to raise awareness. Upon his passing, he wanted me to promise to continue his volunteer work,” Kara said.

She has been a dedicated volunteer ever since.

She has been the Affiliate Chair for the Denver Affiliate of volunteers since 2009, and now her daughter is taking on the role of PurpleStride Chair in the affiliate.

“When Cassie expressed her interest in a leadership role, I couldn’t help but feel my dad’s presence. I know he’s smiling down on us and is very proud,” Kara said.

Kara is looking forward to teaming up with her daughter and making an impact at this year’s PurpleStride Denver.

“It will be great to share a vision for PurpleStride and be able to spend time together,” Kara said. “Time spent with your kids is precious. Knowing I can share this with her means the world to me.”

PurpleStride is critical to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s fundraising efforts.

“The event raises necessary funds to fight pancreatic cancer on all fronts and helps people impacted by this disease to find support,” Kara said.

“Hope is created at PurpleStride.”

When asked about what she is looking forward to most about the new opportunity, Cassie said it’s about being a part of a movement.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people, becoming more involved in my community and being a part of something greater than myself for an amazing cause.”
