Miss Louisiana, Laryssa Bonacquisti, will compete in the 2018 Miss America Competition finals on Sept. 10

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network wishes Laryssa Bonacquisti good luck as she enters the final rounds of the 2018 Miss America Competition on Sunday, Sept. 10.

Bonacquisti is representing the state of Louisiana in the national competition, and will use the platform to help raise awareness for pancreatic cancer – the world’s toughest cancer.

Earlier this year, the disease claimed the life of her grandmother, Charlotte Laveron Falls.

“Although my grandmother lost her battle, I am determined to fight for those who continue to face this silent killer,” Bonacquisti said.

Pancreatic cancer claims the lives of 91 percent of its victims within five years.

Bonacquisti is adamant about accelerating research progress in hopes of finding an early diagnostic tool to fight pancreatic cancer. She created Team Charlotte in honor of her grandmother for PurpleStride New Orleans, the walk to end pancreatic cancer,  which will take place on Sunday, Nov. 5.

Be sure to follow her journey at the competition on Instagram at instagram.com/missamericala. You can also watch the competition live this Sunday on ABC at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.
