National Cancer Institute

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts and supports basic and clinical research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health.

NIH Loan Repayment Programs
Designed to attract doctoral-level professionals to careers in clinical, pediatric, health disparities, or contraceptive and infertility research.

NIH Director’s Pioneer Award
Supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who are conducting pioneering – and possibly transforming approaches – to major challenges in biomedical and behavioral research.

National Institute of Nursing Research
Supports clinical and basic research and research training on health and illness across the lifespan. The research focus encompasses health promotion and disease prevention, quality of life, health disparities, and end-of-life.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration Orphan Products Grant Program
Encourages clinical development of products for use in rare diseases or conditions. The products studied can be drugs, biologics, medical devices, or medical foods.


Private Foundations Funding Cancer Research

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
Provides Fellowships/Young Investigator Awards, Career Development Awards and Pilot Grants that provide seed money for new ideas and innovative models. Funds basic, translational and clinical research.

American Cancer Society
The nation’s largest private, not-for-profit source of funds for scientists studying cancer. Focuses its funding on investigator-initiated, peer-reviewed proposals.

American Association for Cancer Research
The oldest and largest scientific organization in the world focused on cancer research.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Supports research to advance the biomedical sciences.

The Charlotte Geyer Foundation
Provides interim funding up to $100,000 to researchers who have submitted an original R01 or R21 proposal to the National Cancer Institute and have not received a fundable score.

Concern Foundation
Funds researchers who lack financial support for their first major research project and provides critically needed start up funds for promising projects.  Funding is provided to study many forms of cancer, primarily in the areas of immunology, immunotherapy, and the genetics of cancer.

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation
Encourages the nation’s most promising young investigators to pursue careers in cancer research by funding initial postdoctoral Fellowship Awards, Innovation Awards and Clinical Investigator Awards.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
The Medical Research Program supports clinical research that advances the translation of basic biomedical discoveries into applications that improve human health.

Fannie E. Rippel Foundation
Invests in efforts that challenge existing paradigms, provide highly innovative and actionable alternatives to current beliefs and behaviors, create and support new modes of leadership, and foster dynamic synergies that offer model processes for change.

Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research
Supports basic science, translational research and most recently started a tissue bank at UCLA.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation
Funds cancer survivorship research that builds on the body of knowledge and services to improve quality of life for cancer survivors across physical, psychosocial and practical challenges; and community-based participatory research (CBPR), through which community members and researchers collaborate in a mutual learning process to research and solve survivorship issues identified by the community.

The Lustgarten Foundation
Supports basic and clinical pancreatic cancer research at both domestic and international institutions.

Michael Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation
Provides support for advanced medical research to speed the development of early detection strategies and funds leading clinical and academic centers.

The National Pancreas Foundation
Supports the funding of research related to pancreatic diseases.

National Foundation for Cancer Research
Believes in discovery-oriented basic science research and provides flexible funding to scientists from various disciplines such as math, physics, biology, and chemistry.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Funds projects in the United States and U.S. territories that are design to improve the health and health care of all Americans. Aims to fund innovative projects that can have measurable impact and can create meaningful, transformative change, such as service demonstrations; gathering and monitoring of health-related statistics; public education; training and fellowship programs; policy analysis; health services research; technical assistance; communications activities; and evaluations.

Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research
Funds the Kimmel Scholars Program, which provides research grants to the nation’s most promising young cancer researchers.

Stand Up To Cancer
A charitable program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation established by media, entertainment and philanthropic leaders who have been affected by cancer. SU2C aims to raise significant funds for translational cancer.
