Celgene, Tempur-Pedic, and Rancho Palos Verdes Mayor (Ret.) Larry Clark to be Honored at the 16th Annual “An Evening with the Stars” Gala

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA (October 17, 2013) — The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org) will present its 16th Annual ‘An Evening with the Stars’ gala on Saturday, October 19 at 6pm at the iconic Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Celgene Corporation, Tempur-Pedic North America, LLC, and Rancho Palos Verdes Mayor (ret.) and pancreatic cancer survivor Larry Clark will be honored during an evening that is dedicated to advancing research, supporting patients and creating hope for everyone affected by pancreatic cancer.

This year’s gala will be hosted by Lisa Niemi Swayze and will include Sean Kelly, star of TruTV’s Storage Hunters, as the auctioneer.

“Our annual ‘An Evening with the Stars’ gala is an evening of hope and inspiration for the pancreatic cancer community. This year, we are proud to honor Celgene, Tempur-Pedic and Larry Clark for their support of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and outstanding efforts to change the course of history for this disease,” stated Julie Fleshman, president and CEO of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

The Vision of Progress Award will be presented to Celgene for their commitment to pancreatic cancer research. Celgene’s focus has always been to change the course of human health through bold pursuits in science with a promise to put patients first. The company understands how devastating pancreatic cancer can be and the need to change the course of treatments, advance research and improve survival rates for the disease.

Larry Clark, who served two terms as mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes prior to retiring in 2009, will receive the Spirit of Hope Award, which honors individuals who inspire the critical work of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Clark was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this past March, just one year after professional retirement. Mayor Clark subsequently had surgery and is currently enrolled in a phase III adjuvant pancreatic cancer clinical trial. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will honor Clark for his enduring dedication and positive spirit in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Tempur-Pedic will receive the Emily Couric Public Service Award, which is a tribute to Emily Couric, a Virginia Democratic state senator and the sister of Katie Couric, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2001 at age 54. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network honors Tempur-Pedic for their dedication to the fight against pancreatic cancer and support of the organization. Over the past five years the company has gifted over $1.3 million to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and pledged an additional $800,000 over the next two years, making the company the single largest donor for the organization. Todd Miller, VP, National Accounts for Furniture and Sleep Shops, will accept the award in honor of his brother, Tim, who died last year of pancreatic cancer at the age of 47.

All proceeds from ‘An Evening with the Stars’ will support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s effort to double the survival rate of pancreatic cancer by 2020.
