Survivor Story: Deborah Travis

10/12/2013
My name is Deborah Travis and I was diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma on September 4, 2012.  I went into the hospital with pancreatitis and I was thinking that I had to have my gallbladder removed, but that was not the prognosis.  I chose to see an oncologist in Pittsburgh and he suggested chemotherapy.  I got a second opinion from another doctor closer to home and I liked his way of thinking a lot better.  He made sure that I was in good enough health to undergo the most aggressive chemotherapy.  He and his staff were so positive that it helped me to stay positive, too.

My treatment consisted of a combination of four different drugs.  I started my chemotherapy journey on October 3, 2012 with treatments every other week.  After seven treatments, I had a scan, and was scared to know what the results would show.  I got great news!  The spot on my liver could hardly be seen and my cancer markers were down.  After a couple of more treatments and another scan, the tumor on my pancreas had shrunk enough for me to have the Whipple procedure.

After the surgery, I had more chemotherapy, and after five more treatments, a scan on August 14, 2013 showed more good news...no sign of cancer!  As my surgeon put it, “it's a miraculous remission!”  I thank my oncologist for always making me feel strong enough to fight this.  I thank my surgeon for all of his positive thoughts and words.  There are so many to thank…God first, my mom and my daughters, Alexis and Jessica.  My grandchildren, Travis, Nolace, Neville, and Ruby.  My two friends from high school, Bettyann and Leslie, and to all of my friends and family who helped me in any way.  And, of course, my boyfriend, Brian, who was there for me physically and emotionally.  And last but not least, I thank everyone who prayed for me!

Still going strong, Deborah Travis
