Survivor Story: Kevin Bishop

I was diagnosed in December 2010 with pancreatic cancer.  I later found out the cancer had metastasized to my liver and was stage IV.  After radiation and several rounds of chemotherapy, which included a combination of four drugs, my tumor marker went down from 17,000 to 9 and my cancer went into remission for five months.  My tumor marker began to rise once more and I started taking chemotherapy again, this time a different combination of two drugs.  My tumor marker is now down to 7 again.

I have to say that I know that this is a very dangerous disease.  In my case I never gave into the fact that I could die.  So, I got married and traveled to visit my daughters and grandchildren.  I enjoy every day I wake up.  The positive attitude my wife and I have every day makes all the difference in my recovery.  My wife and I share a great faith in God and rest any concerns in his hands through prayer.

One of the hardest things in the beginning was to have an uninformed doctor give a prognosis of around a year.  However, once I began seeing the oncologist and surgeons who specialize in pancreatic cancer, I realized that this was not the case.  With new chemotherapies being tested every day, there are many options.  Only God knows the actual time a life may end and is in full control.
