“I feel strongly that it's my mission to be an advocate, a voice, because so many pancreatic cancer patients don't get the opportunity to do so. So many wonderful people have come into my life, whom I never would have met otherwise. It fills my heart with joy when new volunteers say ‘I want to become part of this group, and make a difference, like you are!’ Our affiliate has made an impact building awareness, fund raising, and equally important, creating a real community for survivors, families and friends.”

PurpleLight Raleigh-Durham 2013!

Raleigh-Durham went purple on October 27, 2013 for PurpleLight National Vigil for Hope. Family and friends of those touched by pancreatic cancer came together to gain both comfort and encouragement by illuminating purple glow sticks as they heard their loved ones’ names read aloud. Joined by nearly 20,000 participants in more than 80 communities across the country, this marked the largest participation in PurpleLight history and helped kick off National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

Photos will be posted at www.purplelight.org when they are available.

Strider Story: Team Jerry

In January of 2013, Jerry Harris, wonderful husband and father, passed of pancreatic cancer only ten weeks after being diagnosed. While still in shock, his wife, Jean, and daughter, Judy, knew that they had to find some way to fight this horrible disease.

When Judy saw a volunteer ad for PurpleStride Raleigh-Durham in the North Raleigh paper, she and her mother decided to start Team Jerry lead by Jean as the team captain.  At PurpleStride 2013, Team Jerry was one of the top ten teams and Jean was in the top three fundraisers. Jean and Judy's success at PurpleStride gave them a great feeling knowing that they had done something tangible to fight the disease.

When it was time to start planning for PurpleStride 2014, Jean and Judy joined the planning committee as the Team Chair and Volunteer Chair. Jean also worked in the background sponsoring team challenges, helping with the team area, as well as planning course logistics. Team Jerry was joined by Glenaire Retirement Center’s Wellness Program and the team grew to 25 members and raised an impressive $7,220!

Thank you Team Jerry for your support in the fight against pancreatic cancer. We look forward to seeing Team Jerry at PurpleStride Raleigh-Durham in May 2015!
