A Message from the President and CEO

Dear Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Friends:

This month, we are launching an exciting new initiative that will positively impact the pancreatic cancer community for years to come: The vision of progress: Double the pancreatic cancer survival rate by 2020.

Since the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network was founded in 1999, we, along with the support of thousands of our constituents, have helped to secure $71 million in new federal funding for pancreatic cancer research and led the development of the nation's first substantive legislation to advance understanding and treatment of pancreatic cancer. We have awarded 56 research grants totaling $7.1 million to leading scientists studying the disease to advance cutting-edge research and we have provided support to more than 50,000 families affected by the disease through the Patient and Liaison Services, or PALS, program.

In addition, we engage a large and devoted network of volunteers who are helping to raise the awareness and visibility of this disease nationwide. As a highly strategic nonprofit organization, we are also proud to have received Charity Navigator's highest rating for financial oversight.

Due to these efforts, we are seeing positive changes in the development of a comprehensive pancreatic cancer scientific community: More scientists are entering the field, more funds are available for research and we have learned more about the underpinnings of the disease. However, despite this progress, the odds for those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have not changed significantly during the past forty years: The five-year survival rate is just six percent.

We believe that the survival rate can be substantially increased and we will devote considerable effort and resources to doubling it by 2020. We will achieve this goal by accelerating the application of our proven and comprehensive approach to fighting pancreatic cancer—combining research, support for individuals and families living with the disease, and offering community-driven education and advocacy.

In coming months, please look out for more news about ways you can help us as we implement our plan of action to achieve this game-changing initiative. We realize that striving to double the pancreatic cancer survival rate in less than ten years is a bold goal, but we remain confident we can reach it if we all work together.
