CONTROLLER
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will direct the operations of the Financial and Administrative Services department and will be responsible for and oversee all aspects of not-for-profit accounting and gift acknowledgment functions including the timely production of periodic financial reports and the maintenance of a system of accounting records, processes and internal controls that enhance the accuracy of reported financial results, mitigate risk and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. The Controller will support the Chief Financial Officer to ensure processes and procedures reflect donor intent using industry best-practices. The position will be responsible for the supervision of accounting staff.
Principal responsibilities include the following:
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the modification of the organizational structure as necessary to achieve the goals and objectives of a dynamic and rapidly growing organization.
- Coordinate and execute monthly, quarterly and annual financial close processes from account reconciliation and review through report analysis and dissemination.
- Manage staff responsible for revenue data-entry and recognition, gift acknowledgment, event accounting, accounts payable and payroll.
- Prepare cash forecasts and record investment activity.
- Support the CFO and collaborate with the Sr. Manager of Projects and Financial Planning in the development and preparation of the annual budget and subsequent revisions and forecasts.
- Manage the annual audit and timely preparation of the Form 990 tax return.
- Ensure the organization is compliant with all federal, state and local regulations pertaining to sales and use tax obligations and gaming activities.
- Develop or assist in the development of new and improved financial and gift metric reports using the Blackbaud’s Financial Edge accounting and Raiser’s Edge database products, among others.
- Develop or assist in the development, modification and/or implementation of internal control policies and procedures, the documentation and dissemination of same and ensure that processes are compliant with PCI Data Security Standards.
- Ensure that gift accounting processes result in the accurate and timely recording of donor gifts and that acknowledgment processes meet the needs of both the donor and the organization’s Community Engagement departments.
- Research and advise on technical accounting and tax matters.
- Prepare and timely report the quarterly cost expended for lobby efforts.
- Assume all financial duties in the absence of the CFO.
- Participate in Executive Staff meetings.
- Carry out all responsibilities in an honest, ethical and professional manner.
DESIRED TRAITS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
The Controller will be a bright, ambitious, team-oriented individual who is comfortable in a growth-oriented and fast-paced organization. Candidates must have at least 4 years of progressively responsible accounting experience including supervisory experience. In the absence of experience in a not-for-profit environment, the candidate must exhibit knowledge of not-for-profit accounting and familiarity with industry practices. In addition, successful candidates should possess the following skills:
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to manage employees including staffing, training, coaching, motivating and discipline.
- Adept in use of Financial Edge software or demonstrated experience with similar NFP financial systems highly desirable. Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge and/or related products a plus.
- Highly proficient level of expertise in use of Excel. Working knowledge of Crystal Reports a plus.
- Knowledge of industry gift acknowledgment practices and tax reporting requirements.
- Familiarity with sales tax, raffle and gaming regulations and in-kind gift accounting.
- Demonstrated financial, accounting and budgeting proficiency.
- Excellent planning, organizing and management skills.
- Excellent verbal, written and executive communication and presentation skills.
- Analytic aptitude.
- Excellent team-building skills and an ability to interact effectively at all levels of an organization.
- Enjoys and is able to multi-task at various complication levels in a changing environment.
- Comfortable with both hands-on and supervisory work assignments.
EDUCATION:
Successful candidates will possess a Bachelors degree in Finance or Accounting; CPA or other equivalent certification is required.
