Many patients appreciate the advice of an expert who can help them navigate the maze of information after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, especially when it comes to nutrition.

A registered dietitian (preferably a certified oncology dietitian) can be a valuable resource. Maria Petzel, senior clinical dietitian for the Pancreas Surgery Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and a member of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, offers these five things to discuss with your dietitian post-pancreatic cancer diagnosis:

  • Any and all digestive issues
  • Pancreatic enzymes and whether they’re right for you
  • Your nutritional goals related to where you are today and where you’d like to be
  • Tips about how to manage treatment side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and taste changes, BEFORE starting treatment
  • All of your nutrition-related questions! Ask away, because the more informed you are, the more in control you’ll feel.

Pancreatic cancer patients and caregivers can access comprehensive disease information, including diet and nutrition tips, recipes and a booklet on the subject – all reviewed and approved by renowned leaders in the field – by contacting the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s one-on-one PanCAN Patient Services support service by phone or email.
