Raise the Cure
The Largest Funding Initiative in the History of Pancreatic Cancer
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network launched its Raise the Cure campaign
today, an initiative to secure both federal and private funding for
pancreatic cancer research. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is asking
Congress for an unprecedented $170 million in federal funding to carry out
The National Plan to Advance Pancreatic Cancer Research (The Plan) and additionally,
we will raise $25 million in private
funding over the next three years. The merging of these federal and private
funds will support Raise the Cure, our comprehensive strategy and action plan
to put pancreatic cancer research on the fast track in finding a cure.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has taken a leadership role in
developing a plan of action to speed the cure for pancreatic cancer. Our
Scientific Advisory Board, made up of the most prestigious pancreatic cancer
researchers in the country and other members of the scientific
community, developed The Plan based on their professional judgment of what is
necessary to mount a strong, sustainable program to make progress in
pancreatic cancer. Please go to www.pancan.org to read an overview of The National Plan to Advance Pancreatic Cancer Research and

The Raise the Cure launch was timed to kick off as Julie Fleshman, President
and CEO of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and Carnegie Mellon
Professor Dr. Randy Pausch met with Members of Congress to urge them to
provide the federal funds needed to implement The National Plan to Advance
Pancreatic Cancer Research.
"The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has always been a catalyst for progress in
the pancreatic cancer community and we will continue to be with the Raise
the Cure initiative," stated President and CEO, Julie Fleshman. "We have
brought together the best scientific and medical minds with experience in
pancreatic cancer to create a strategy for success. We're not just asking
for funding, we're showing the way to take action, and we have a
comprehensive plan to get us there."
"I fully support the efforts of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Together, we are determined to get the attention and much needed funds to
change the course of history for pancreatic cancer research. Federal dollars
have proven to be effective with other deadly diseases and have lowered the
death rate because they have early diagnostic or pre-screening tools.
Pancreatic cancer has neither," said Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon computer
scientist. "Congress needs to take a tremendous step up and provide the
funding required to conduct the research that will lead to early detection
methods, effective treatments and ultimately a cure for pancreatic cancer."
