NANCY DALY RIORDAN AND DR. RALPH HRUBAN TO BE HONORED BY PANCREATIC CANCER ACTION NETWORK AT "An Evening With The Stars Goes Hollywood" GALA

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. U.S.A. (October 12, 2006)—

Who: The Pancreatic Cancer Network, Inc. (PanCAN), a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, is the first national patient-based advocacy organization to focus on pancreatic cancer. PanCAN advocates for increased research dollars for pancreatic cancer from the federal government, and educates the public, legislators, health and research communities about pancreatic cancer, the risks of the disease and the latest advancements in treatment, detection and prevention. PanCAN also provides essential information services to the pancreatic cancer community through its innovative Patient and Liaison Services program (PALS). The service is provided at no charge and includes the latest information about diagnosis, treatment, surgery options and other essential information.
2006 Honorees:

Nancy Daly Riordan, Emily Couric Public Service Award
Nancy Daly Riordan’s exemplary philanthropic service to America’s children, youth and families spans more than three decades. Mrs. Riordan, this year’s recipient of the Emily Couric Public Service Award, was appointed to President Clinton’s Commission on Children in 1989, and her work with this commission resulted in the passage of more than fourteen Congressional bills and the reauthorization of the federal Safe and Stable Families Act. She is Board Chair of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; other board affiliations include W.M. Keck Foundation; the Los Angeles Opera; The Riordan Foundation; USC Center for Communications Policy and the National Task Force on Early Childhood Education for Hispanics. Nancy is married to former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. Together they have six children and six grandchildren. Recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Ms. Riordan continues to set an example through her courage and her commitment to helping others.

Dr. Ralph Hruban, Johns Hopkins University Medical Visionary Award
Ralph H. Hruban, M.D. is a Professor of Pathology and Oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1996, Dr. Hruban established the online chat page for pancreatic patients and families within the larger Johns Hopkins website. On this chat page, PanCAN’s co-founders and many of the founding volunteers met, and thus, PanCAN was born. Dr. Hruban established the National Familial Tumor Registry in 1994 and currently practices surgical pathology with a subspecialty interest in pancreas pathology.
