Awareness and Research Dollars for Pancreatic Cancer

That's when Z Gallerie, America's premiere lifestyle home furnishing
and accessory retailer, will donate a portion of its sales at select
stores to pancreatic cancer research. The Gardena, Calif.-based
retailer is partnering with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
(PanCAN) to raise awareness about the devastating disease and contribute
money for much-needed research.
From 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov.
21, shoppers at the following Z Gallerie locations will receive
a 15 percent discount off all purchases (excluding furniture):
South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Kierland Commons, Scottsdale, Arz.;
Santana Row, San Jose, Calif.; Mall of the Millenia, Orlando, Fla.; North Avenue,
Chicago, Ill.; Dallas Store, Dallas, Tex.; Perimeter Mall, Atlanta, Ga.; Sherman
Oaks Galleria, Sherman Oaks, Calif.; Fashion Valley, San Diego, Calif.; and
Cherry Creek, Denver, Colo. Shoppers at each location will also be eligible
to enter and win a $500 "Shirley Key" sweepstakes. Shirley Zeiden,
mother of the Z Gallerie founders, passed away as a result of pancreatic cancer
in 2002.

Volunteers from PanCAN, the first national public-benefit
advocacy organization for the pancreatic cancer community, will
be on hand to provide information
about pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the
U.S. among men and women.
Pancreatic Cancer
Facts for 2003
• Pancreatic Cancer has the No. 1 fatality rate of all
cancers.
• Pancreatic Cancer is the No. 4 cancer killer in the United States among
both men and women.
• Approximately 30,700 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer
this year in the United States and 30,000 people will die.
• The 99% mortality rate for pancreatic cancer is the highest of any cancer.
• Pancreatic cancer does not discriminate by age, gender or race. Only
4% of patients will survive beyond five years.
• The average life expectancy after diagnosis with metastatic disease is
just three to six months.
• Despite the especially lethal nature of pancreatic cancer, the research
spending per pancreatic cancer patient is only $779, the lowest of any leading
cancer.
• The National Cancer Institute (NCI) spent approximately 23.6 million
dollars on pancreatic cancer research in 2002. This is just a mere 0.6 of 1%
of the NCI’s 4.190 billion dollar cancer research budget for 2002.
• No effective early detection methods have been developed. There are minimal
treatment options available and very little research is under way due to limited
research funding.
• Purple ribbons have become the symbol for the fight against pancreatic
cancer.
