JONES DAY’S FREDERICK MCKNIGHT RECEIVES
PANCAN’S
EMILY COURIC PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD AT CELEBRITY GALA
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. U.S.A. (Nov. 17,
2003) - The
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) honored Frederick McKnight
of Jones Day, one of the world’s largest and most geographically
diverse law firms, with its Emily Couric Public Service Award.
The Emily Couric Public Service Award honors an individual or organization
that in its public role exemplifies the dedication to others as
seen in the life and work of Emily Couric. Frederick McKnight,
partner-in-charge at the Jones Day Los Angeles office, accepted
the award at PanCAN’s “An Evening with the Stars” celebrity
gala on Nov. 8th during pancreatic cancer awareness month. PanCAN,
based in El Segundo, Calif., is the first, national patient-based
advocacy organization for the pancreatic cancer community, including
patients, families, medical researchers and physicians.
Throughout
its century-long history, Jones Day has maintained a strong commitment
to the public good through its pro bono practice.
The Jones Day Los Angeles office took on PanCAN as a pro bono client
in the fall of 2002, and is now helping to serve the pancreatic
cancer community. In the last two years, Jones Day has provided
approximately $400,000 to $500,000 of pro bono legal services per
year for each of the last two years.
Emily Couric, former Virginia
State Senator for the 25th district, died on October 18, 2001 of
pancreatic cancer. As a lasting tribute
to Emily Couric’s commitment, selfless dedication and great
vision for a better, safer, and healthier world, the Pancreatic
Cancer Action Network named the “Emily Couric Public Service
Award” in her honor.
Julie Fleshman, Executive Director of
the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, said, “Emily Couric
was a strong and effective advocate for public education and health
care issues. It is our privilege
to honor her memory and recognize other individuals who are making
a difference in the pancreatic cancer community, like the prestigious
Jones Day law office in Los Angeles and its partner-in-charge Frederick
McKnight.”
About Pancreatic Cancer
Approximately 30,700 people in the United States will be diagnosed
with pancreatic cancer this year. Pancreatic cancer is the 4th
leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. for men and women,
and only 4 percent of patients survive beyond five years. The
99% mortality rate is the highest of any cancer. There is no
cure or early detection methods and effective treatment options
are extremely limited. Purple ribbons have become the symbol
for the fight against pancreatic cancer.

surviving family members of individuals who died of pancreatic cancer.
