NCI SPORE Grants
Another huge step towards progress is the announcement of a Pancreatic
Cancer Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs). This
is the first pancreatic cancer specific SPORE ever. SPOREs utilize
a grant mechanism to support interdisciplinary teams of investigators
who are dedicated to translational research and focused on an organ
specific human cancer. Using an interdisciplinary team approach,
a domestic public or private, for-profit or not-for-profit institution
can apply for a SPORE grant worth 2.75 million dollars for up to
five years. This is additional money toward pancreatic cancer research
and an extremely important step towards increasing the overall funding
pool for this disease.
