NCI Payline Policies for Pancreatic Cancer Research

Payline Policy for Fiscal Year 2004:

The NCI funding policy for pancreatic grants in 2004 is different from the extended payline policy of 2002 and 2003. NCI policy in 2002 and 2003 provided a formal 50% extended payline for those grants with 100% relevance to pancreatic cancer. The grants that met this criteria were identified and paid as exceptions.

The NCI policy for 2004 starts with the R01 applications that were submitted in February 2003 and will continue indefinitely. The NCI Program Staff for each division will identify R01s with 50 percent or greater pancreatic cancer relevance especially those that scored within 10 points of the payline and have direct costs of $ 350,000 or less. These grants will be submitted to each Division Director for exception funding. Grants scoring 10 points outside of the payline or with budgets in excess of $ 350,000 also will be given consideration; however, these grants are approved at NCI by the Institute's Executive Committee.

Payline Policy for Fiscal Year 2002,2003:

The payline for pancreatic cancer-relevant research is 50 percent higher than the overall payline for NCI research grants for the fiscal year 2002 (ends September 30, 2002). Only those applications that are 100 percent relevant to pancreatic cancer are eligible for the higher payline.

Suggested Guidelines:

To mark an application for consideration of exception funding, investigators should cite the PRG Report and include the following language in the Background section of the grant application and on the cover page:

The research described in this application is [insert percentage between 50-100] percent relevant to pancreatic cancer.
